Pretty sad, though thankfully the M2 seems to harken back to better days.

Grouchy old BMW bike rider, never seen one of those before.

All prestige brands are about “social aura” today.

Well, I took this photo myself from the latest R&T, so I think we’re safe.

What are his thoughts on the mediocrity put out by the rest of the companies he worked for.

It was in the R&T magazine for this month that I got in the mail today. Doesn’t solidify it as truth, but the last page was a Q&A with Lutz.

He was at GM most recently. New Corvette / Camero are great, as is the SS, but nobody is buying them.

At FCA, the Hellcats and Viper are great, but nobody is buying them.

The majority of customers want either a crossover or a pickup, and don’t care about fast cars. There is still a market for fast cars, just a small one.

I know but that’s 4 great models out of who knows how many shit ones. Call BMW what you want (referring to lutz) but I can’t recall any models past or present that make you think “wow this is a shit box that was slapped together”.

Lutz says this so often I wonder if he’s shorted BMW stock or something.

Yep. This.

Actually, if you take the whole history of BMW, it’s only really a flash in the pan of them being top-dogs with that sort of thing.

From the E30 M3 to E46 M3 they fit the description above. Before that with the E21 and 2002 they were a step behind Alfa and a couple of others in the areas they competed in, and after the E46 Mercedes’ AMGs seemed to get the formula more right than BMWs.

Such is the way of the world. The greats rise and fall.

At least we still have the 2-series... The E9x was widely loved, praised and was winning comparison tests for many years - despite it getting heavier and more complex, the core of the beast was still textbook M. Definitely seems like the E46 and E39 were the zenith, though.

Or perhaps they treated him poorly on his way out?

Agreed, although I do baulk slightly at the fact that it’s ~1400kg, but I suppose that’s the way of the world these days.

Yeah the E9x were (and still are) great cars, no doubt about it. I only didn’t include them in the list as it seems like that was the generation that the competition were really starting to catch up and at times surpass BMW on the ‘kickass car’ scales.

“With its five-comparison-test winning streak, the current BMW M3 is our very own Ken Jennings, engineered to dominate our comparos. And, like Jennings, its success annoys some people. Administering beat-downs on some of the world’s best cars will do that.” Spoiler: it won #6 in this comparison. But you’re right, AMG was nipping at their heels by that point, and winning over some.   http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2012-bmw-m3-vs-2012-mercedes-benz-c63-amg-comparison-test

Yeah it’s the beginning of the end for M-car dominance, but still at the top :)

I do feel like the non-M cars suffered sooner though, although that might be a result of the rosy afterglow the E30 has managed to cultivate...

I knew it was pretty much over when the F30 3-series was panned pretty regularly. The magic of BMW in the good years was that even their bottom of the line cars were really rewarding to drive.

Like I said, at least the 2-series line is still holding the torch for “old” BMW!

Yeah I feel that was BMW’s real strength. No matter what car of theirs you got into, it would be special. From the lowliest 316i to the mightiest 740i.

I remember reading that Car and Driver suspension jig comparo when it came out and thinking ‘this is it. This is the point that BMW has become Mercedes’.
